Palm OS application installation issues

If you are having issues trying to install your Palm OS application, here are some things that you can try to get it working.

Palm user name issues

When you are trying to install the PRC file, it asks you which Palm user name that you want to install the program to. You need to make sure to select the correct user name at this step, otherwise the program will not install to your handheld during your next sync.

To check your handheld's user name, you need to be at the Palm's home screen with all of the application icons. If you are not there, tap the Home button to get there. Make sure it says All in the upper right corner of the screen, and find the HotSync program icon. Tap this icon, and your handheld's user name will be displayed in the upper right corner of the screen.

Clear out trapped PRC files

Sometimes, Palm Desktop and the Quick Install Tool (or Install Tool) can get confused when it tries to add the application to your device.

To clear this problem, you need to search your computer for any instances of the handheld application you are trying to install, and delete them.

Follow the steps below to search your C: drive and display the path names of the files that need to be deleted before you try to install the application again. Please note that if the path displayed for the PRC is the installation path of your software (usually in the C:\Program Files\Digital Scout or C:\Program Files (x86)\Digital Scout folder), that you do not want to delete PRC files in these folders.

Command that you need to type in below are shown in bold. After entering a command, press the Enter key to run the command.

Open the Run dialog by holding down the Windows key on your keyboard (usually between the Ctrl and Alt keys on the lower left of your keyboard) and press the R key, or by clicking the Start menu and selecting Run.

On the Run dialog, type cmd and press Enter. This will open a command prompt window.

Type c: and press Enter.

Type cd \ and press Enter. Please note that this is the backslash character and not the regular slash character. The regular slash is on the same key as the question mark, and the backslash character is on the key that is usually above the Enter key.

Enter one of the following commands based on the product you are trying to install, and press Enter:

Web Enabled Baseball Statware: dir baseball10.prc /s

Web Enabled Basketball Statware: dir basketball9.prc /s

Web Enabled Football Statware: dir football8.prc /s

Web Enabled Softball Statware: dir softball10.prc /s

Baseball Statware v7.0: dir baseball7.prc /s

Basketball Statware v6.0: dir basketball6.prc /s

Football Scoutware v7.0: dir fbscout7.prc /s

Football Statware v7.0: dir football7.prc /s

Hockey Statware v1.0: dir hockey.prc /s

Soccer Statware v6.0: dir soccer6.prc /s

Softball Statware v7.0: dir softball7.prc /s

Volleyball Statware v6.0: dir volleyball6.prc /s

You will see a list of files, and the full path to the file is shown above the file name. You should delete all of the PRC files (except those in the Digital Scout program installation path, see the warning above) and re-run the command you did in step 5 until there are no more references to the PRC file.

Once you delete the extra PRC files, try to run the Palm OS Software Components installer again (for Web Enabled products), or try to use the Install Palm application option from the Tools > Utilities > Palm utilities menu again (for legacy Statware and Scoutware products).

Check the Quick Install Tool and Install Tool

Depending on your installation of Palm Desktop, you may have one or both of these tools on your computer.

Check your Start menu (usually under the Programs > Palm or PalmOne) and desktop for shortcuts to these applications, and run them if you find them. When they appear, there should be a user name selector, make sure it is set for your handheld user name. Then, check the list of files that are to be installed to your handheld, and if you see an entry there for the product you are trying to install, click the entry and click Remove.

If you see icons for both Quick Install Tool and Install Tool, check both of them and clean out any entries you see for your handheld user name.

Then, try to to use the Install Palm application option from the Tools > Utilities > Palm utilities menu again (for legacy Statware and Scoutware products).

How to check if your conduit is installed

Before you can check to see if your conduit is installed, you need to find out if you have HotSync Manager 6.0 or older (referred to as HSM6 below), or if you have the latest HotSync Manager 7.0 (HSM7) software installed on your computer, as the directions are slightly different depending on which version you have.

To learn this, right click on your HotSync icon in the lower right corner of your screen, and a menu will appear. (The HotSync icon is a half-red and half-blue circle with two arrows inside of the icon.)

If the menu that appears has some or all of the following options, you have HotSync Manager 6.0 or older:

Local USB

Setup...

Custom...

File Link...

View Log...

About...

Help...

Exit

If the menu that appears has these 3 options, you have HotSync Manager 7.0:

Settings...

Install...

Exit

Follow these steps to figure out if your Digital Scout Statware or Scoutware conduit is correctly installed:

Right click on the HotSync icon in the lower right corner of your screen, and a menu will appear. (The HotSync icon is a half-red and half-blue circle with two arrows inside of the icon.)

Select Custom... if you have HSM6, or select Settings... and then click the Applications link on the left side of the HotSync Manager window if you have HSM7.

From the conduit list that appears, check for the conduit for your particular product and version. For example, if you have version 6 of the Statware Basketball product, you will be looking for an entry called Statware Basketball v6.

Click once on the conduit entry to highlight it, and click Change... (HSM6) or Configure... (HSM7).

You should see a message box appear that tells you what version of the conduit you are running. If you receive this message without any errors or warnings, the conduit is installed correctly.

If you receive any errors or other messages, or if the conduit does not respond when clicking Change or Configure, then the conduit is not correctly installed.

How to submit a Web Enabled desktop client data file at the request of Digital Scout

This applies to the Digital Scout Web Enabled Statware products only and should only be submitted at the request of a Digital Scout Technical Support Representative.

If you need to send the data file from your Digital Scout Web Enabled desktop client software product, follow these steps:

Launch the desktop client application for your particular sport.

From the Help menu, select Open data file location. This will bring up an Explorer window with some files in it. Do not close this window.

Go back to the desktop client software by clicking on its window or its icon in the system tray, and close down the desktop client software.

Locate the data file for your particular product in the Explorer window. The file name will be the sport along with an .sdf file extension. For example, if you are looking for the Football Statware data file, the file name would be Statware Football.sdf.

Right click on the file and select Copy.

Right click on the desktop of your computer and select Paste. This will place a copy of the data file on the desktop of your computer.

Launch your e-mail program and reply to a message from Digital Scout tech support, and before sending the message, attach the .sdf file you just pasted on the desktop.

After you verify that the e-mail was sent, you can delete the .sdf file you copied to your desktop. Do not delete the .sdf file in the folder displayed after you clicked the Help menu in the desktop client application.

After your message has been sent, please monitor your e-mail inbox to make sure that the message was delivered and was not returned due to a problem with the e-mail address or attachment.

If you receive a data file back from Digital Scout, you need to make sure that you put the file in the correct location. If you made any changes to your data file between the time you sent the data file initially and the time the repaired data file comes back, you may not want to do this procedure, as it will erase any work you have done in that time period. Save the attached database to your computer desktop, then right click on the file and select Copy, follow the first 4 steps above, and right click on an open area of the Explorer window and select Paste. This will replace your existing desktop client database with the one sent to you by Digital Scout.

If you are receiving an error during your HotSync that includes the error code 8009, this is a problem with your installation of Palm Desktop and is not a problem with the Digital Scout software.

Here are a couple of links to Palm's support web site that address some of the solutions to a HotSync that fails with error 8009:

If you installed Palm Desktop on your Windows Vista or Windows 7 computer from the CD that came with the handheld, you may need to uninstall Palm Desktop, and then download and install a newer version of Palm Desktop for your desktop operating system and handheld model. Please visit this web site for more information:

Here are some examples of some of the 8009 error messages you might see on your handheld or in your desktop HotSync log that may be helped by suggestions provided in the above links.
